ÔMINA ROMANA: Mr. Anton F. Börner tribute to the history of viticulture in Velletri

Wine-growing activities in Lazio region (located in the centre of Italian peninsula) became during Etruscan period, and were later on boosted by Roman Empire.

Anton F. Börner, German entrepreneur with a huge passion for History, Philosophy and great wines, decided to buy an 80 hectares land surrounded by Colli Albani hills (in Castelli Romani area) in order to build his winery together with his family.

Mr. Börner has an international commercial and financial experience; he’s the former President of BGA (Federation of German Wholesale, Foreign Trade and Services) and he worked for a lifetime with the purpose of growing the business of his native country (Germany); however, back in 2017, something changed.

Once he bought this vineyard in Velletri province (not far from Rome), he decided to explant everything in order to change the production philosophy: from an intensive cultivation to a few varietals only. He committed several studies involving local universities and worldwide experts in order to choose the best varietals for this terroir and climate conditions: he wanted to produce great quality wines only.

His daughter Katharina is the official owner of the estate, where also the rest of the family, together with different wine production experts, is involved.

This is actually a quite unique area for wine-growing. Weather conditions are influenced by the sea (located 25km away), the hills, cold winds from Colli and even a part of volcanic soil; all of these creates really interesting temperature variations and also different climates and micro climates are involved. Everything is monitored by four weather stations located on the corners of the vineyards.

Ômina Romana first label was launched about ten years ago and, as of today, the production includes 60% red grape varietals, such as: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and the local Cesanese; the remaining 40% is devoted to white grape varietals such as Chardonnay and Viognier.

Inside each bottle we can find simply perfect wines (talking about structure and balance), but also giving a very elegant taste in mouth.

Scientific researches (each row is numbered and a few tests are made every day in order to check the best time to harvest), together with the ambition to reach perfection, appears easily when drinking a glass of Merlot (with an elegant ruby red color and giving a both light and full bodied taste), or Cesanese either (pure tribute to Lazio region). Last but not least, Viognier varietal gives an intense and complex wine, with citrus and herbs notes and a surprisingly gold color (it almost looks like an orange wine!).

Ômina name is another tribute to History: it comes from a latin word meaning ‘good omens’ and it is symbolised on the labels by a phoenix, the bird which gains new and shiny life from ashes, as well as this terroir is now giving great wines after years of intensive production.
